Love, Literacy, and Liberation in the Culturally Inclusive Classroom

Goals and Objectives of this Course:

  • Use prompts about culturally inclusive literacy practices to describe assumptions and insights of practitioners, researchers and self, including how the information relates to professional education practice and growth.
  • Design a culturally inclusive lesson plan to honor students’ home languages and linguistic diversity.
  • Collaborate with a colleague to develop a family and community engagement initiative or engage with families through the use of student and family surveys to inform instruction.
  • Implement culturally inclusive reading and writing lesson plans.
  • Challenge the status quo related to inequitable school practices and policies by investigating current policies for bias or creating an action plan to combat harmful coded language in schools.
  • Audit your classroom practices by investigating your current curriculum or classroom library.
  • Apply culturally inclusive tools for supporting students’ literacy growth.
