Meet Renewal Requirements

Requirements for renewal differ based on your employment status and the type of license/certificate you hold. If under contract in a Maryland local school system, a non-public school providing services to special education students, or a State institution, renewal request will be processed by your employer.

If you are not under contract with a Maryland local school system, non-public school providing services to special education students, or a State institution, you will need to submit a renewal application through The Educator Application and Certification Hub (TEACH). Be prepared to submit six semester hours of credit that is:

  • Earned or taught at a regionally accredited college/university or through Maryland approved Continuing Professional Development    (CPD) credits*; and
  • Related to a PK-12 public school assignment; and
  • Earned within the 5-year validity period of the expiring license/certificate; and
  • Earned in required reading coursework if not already completed (teaching areas only).
    • Maryland license/certificate holders with license/certification in a secondary content area, special education 6- Adult, PreK-12 disciplines, and library media specialist are required to complete 6 semester hours in reading/literacy, which shall include:
    • License/certificate holders with license/certification in early childhood education, elementary education, and special education Infant-3 and 1-8 are required to complete 12 semester hours in reading, which shall include:
      • 5262: The course, Processes and Acquisition of Literacy Skills, has been approved with conditions for 3 credits until December 31, 2028 with the assigned CPD number of 23-68-26C.
      • 5263: The course, Materials for Teaching Literacy, has been approved with conditions for 3 credits until December 31, 2028 with the assigned CPD number of 23-68-29C.
      • 5264: The course, Instruction in Literacy, has been approved with conditions for 3 credits until December 31, 2028 with the assigned CPD number of 23-68-27C.
      • 5265: The course, Assessment of Literacy, has been approved with conditions for 3 credits until December 31, 2028 with the assigned CPD number of 23-68-28C
    • Outstanding reading coursework is due at the renewal of the professional license/certificate.

Credit Conversion

1 Teaching Channel with Learners Edge graduate level, continuing education credit = 1 semester credit hour

Each Teaching Channel with Learners Edge 3-credit course requires approximately 45 hours for course completion.

  • Earned or taught at a regionally accredited college/university.
