To me, the best part of the book is the journey with a young student named Joey. In Chapter One, “The School of Hard Knocks” we are introduced to Joey. The story threads through the book and the reader becomes invested and attached to this young man who is finding his way. By the end of the book, the reader has developed a relationship and has formed an opinion to answer the question “What are we going to do about Joey?”
The book introduces us to the ALSUP-Assessment of Lagging Skills and Unresolved Problems inventory, as well as the CPS-Collaborative & Proactive Solutions approach—which includes the Empathy Step, the Adult Concerns Step, and the Invitation Step.
